Kesseböhmer attracts new generation of skilled employees

Nearly 250 visitors were inspired by the Kesseböhmer Group at this year’s open evening for prospective trainees in Bad Essen.

On 19 June 2018, pupils, parents and teachers were able to find out about the internationally active company in the metalworking industry and their entry level opportunities for young people starting their careers. Trainees, trainers and HR staff organised a varied programme and provided the basis for an intensive exchange with schools in the region in order to offer support to future skilled employees in their career choices and recruit them for the company.

The focus at Kesseböhmer in Bad Essen on 19 June 2018 was on twenty technical, industrial and commercial occupations as well as dual work and study programmes. These include professional drivers, chemical laboratory technicians, electronics technicians for industrial systems, warehouse logistics specialists, IT specialists for systems integration, industrial and IT assistants, industrial mechanics, machine and plant operators, media designers, surface treatment operatives, technical product designers, process mechanics for coating technology and toolmakers. Courses on the dual study programmes at the company lead to a BA business studies degree, BEng industrial engineering degree or BSc mechanical engineering, information science and electrical engineering degrees.

Guided tours of the plant during the open evening gave an impression of everyday working life at Kesseböhmer. At information stands in the half-timbered building that acts as a showroom for the furniture fittings/kitchens business unit, trainees explained their specialist fields, shared their experiences and described the tasks associated with the various occupations using practical examples. The visitors could try their hand at punching a bottle opener, gold plating a shopping chip or operating a robot. The pupils also had the chance to carry out chemical experiments with the trainers in charge, edit their own photos or explore the teaching workshop in the new building with VR glasses. Recruitment advisors revealed how they could successfully present themselves to their future employer if they were interested.

Kesseböhmer’s new idea of offering a taste of eight different occupations on one-day practical sessions during the summer holidays was particularly well received by the youngsters. They were able to register then and there for these taster sessions.
Teachers got the opportunity on 19 June for the first time before the start of the official procedure to find out what is involved with the various occupations for which training is offered at Kesseböhmer and to agree on the application rules in an exchange with the HR staff. Contacts were thus established to support prospective new entrants in their career choices expertly and comprehensively but also more in-depth cooperation was discussed, via which the schools and the company could work together even closer. During an exclusive tour of the plant, the teachers found out about the various areas where new entrants would be working during and after training.

This makes the company one of the largest trainers in the region – and according to a study by Deutschland Test, published in Focus 14/2018 (31 March 2018), one of the best in Germany.
